Step Pyramid at Saqqara with front entrance Wall, Egypt.

Early Dynastic 2920 BC - 2575 BC
The Pharaohs of the Early Dynastic Period were ruling a newly unified Egypt. They made their capital Memphis. Narmer was an early king during this period.

The most famous monument from this time is the Step Pyramid of Djoser.

Djoser displayed the importance of the agricultural wealth of Egypt and the system of taxes and administration that held the country together by building a miniature city with grain storage and administration buildings within the walls of the mortuary complex of the Step Pyramid. This nearby city would enable him to continue to work for the people of Egypt after his death to ensure their continued prosperity.

The complex was completed well before his death and was used for state ceremonies. The interior of the reconstructed entrance, shown here, would have seen great state processions move through the darkness of the "reed" columns toward the open, decorated courtyard that stood before the pyramid.
