Suzie Manley's Egypt - Stories of Egyptian History, Mystery and Magic

Memphis

Memphis was the capital of Egypt, before the Pharaohs moved to Thebes. It is located near Saqqara. Memphis remained an administrative center throughout Egypt's history, and was still an impressive ruin in the 12th century AD. However, today, the historic ruins have been "mined" for their limestone blocks and the tourist area is only a small area of the former city.

The area around the statuary enclosure is heavily cultivated and settled by local farmers. However, there are other isolated antiquities to see, including the embalming house for the Apis Bulls.

On the left is an Alabaster sphinx  of Hatshepsut from the New Kingdom

  Statue of Ramesses II
This large statue of Rameses II traveled to the sister city of Memphis, Tennessee in the USA in a large Rameses exhibit. These traveling tours, like the earlier Tutankhamun exhibit earn badly needed funds for restoration of monuments.

  Statue 2
This large statue of Ramesses II is 10 meters long even with the legs missing! Its companion statue has been moved to stand in front of the central railway station in Cairo.

Details of this statue are shown below, just click on the thumbnail picture to see them full screen.
